BRUNO BELTRÃO & GRUPO DE RUA

H² - A passion for hip-hop and break in the head
Hip-hop is the language of the streets, the outskirts of big cities, of people who normally have no voice. Hip-hop is its own unique kind of music with its own strict rules. One of these is that everyone dances by themselves, with no physical contact.
Hip-hop has introduced a number of innovations to different scenes of dance//revolutionized many different types of dance. But the masculine genre, nearly thirty years old now, isn’t exactly young anymore. It was time for someone to breathe new life into this style of dance. Bruno Beltrão has been very successful in doing just that, even if he has drawn a lot of criticism from the hip-hop scene.
Beltrão has broken all the rules of hip-hop. He dared to “infuse breakdancing with a compositional intelligence and condense it into something new. Instead of just taking the dance off the street and to the stage, his works respect the rules of the theater”.
Bruno Beltrão discovers or even creates an until now unknown space between hip-hop and contemporary dance with different types of music, including Rimsky Korsakov (Russia), free jazz or even complete silence. His works feature a wide range of movements which reflect self-confidence and brilliance. Rather than appearing artificial, they are always consistent and comprehensible. "H²“is performed by young men, all from the hip-hop scene in different cities throughout Brazil. They show their incredible dance abilities on the white stage. The backdrop is a white screen illuminated with geometric lights in a dialogue with the choreography.

Bruno Beltrão started learning street dance in Niterói, a city near Rio. He studied dance and philosophy at the University of Rio de Janeiro before starting his career as a choreographer. “H²“ is a hit worldwide. In an interview, Bruno Beltrão said that he goes to the ocean as often as possible. He feels that watching the play of the waves is the best way to learn about movement.
