Among others the winners of the hip-hop contest held at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum
Locking, popping, crumping and more. They come from the street or even better: directly from the Ruhrpott-Battle, where breakdance crews from various different countries "compete for honor and respect".
Locking is danced to funk music and has a clearly defined movement image. "Cool" and "comical" are typical locking expressions. Its movement combinations, which originate from the "social dances" of the 60s in the USA, often bear names from cartoons like Skeeter Rabbit or Tom and Jerry. Popping is a special way of moving in breakdance. Movements are performed mechanically like a robot with muscle contraction and relaxation. Crumping, which originated from "Clown Dancing" or "Clowning", is a fast expressive freestyle dance form which has its roots in the Afro-American communities of South Los Angeles. Crump dancers tell stories with their movements.
Three categories of hip-hop – breaking, electro, crumping – will perform with and against each other with twenty four dancers and two DJs at the "Wutal Battle" festival. A renowned beatboxer will serve as the event's moderator. Beatboxing is a very individual form of music without a sound canon and standard repertory, in which the mouth is used to generate sounds of drums and percussion instruments. This promises to be an exciting evening!
