“You stand in the middle, dominating this bacchanal, yet your hips are completely still. I always try to escape this flamenco cliché, but the new style comes from its roots. People describe my movements as new or even grotesque, but I learned them from looking at pictures taken over fifty years ago. I’m trying to bring dance back to its essence, even if it the result doesn’t look pretty. In the end, it’s purer.” Dancer Israel Galván describes himself: “Reviver: Yes! Contemporary: Yes! At the same time, however, supported and bound by a strong tradition.”
Israel Galván de los Reyes was born in Seville in 1973. His parents were flamenco dancers. His father introduced him to this dance as a child before he joined Mario Maya’s “Compañia Andaluza de Danza” in 1992. He left the company soon after to pursue his own direction, creating nine productions between 1998 and 2008.
EVA YERBABUENA’S BALLET FLAMENCO
SANTO Y SEÑA
“A room, a place – it doesn’t matter where. The body of a man and that of a woman support each other. This is a story of love between two people in an artificial world where pure emotion is a tangible event. At the same time, the silence protects their secret love.“
This is how Eva Yerbabuena, one of the world’s greatest flamenco dancers, describes her 2002 production “The voice of the silence“. “I wander through the loneliness of my dreams and desires. I withdraw into the reminiscences that flow through my memory.” She strives to bring traditional flamenco and contemporary forms of dance together in a unique way.
Eva Yerbabuena was born in Frankfurt am Main, but became a dancer in Granada. She founded the ensemble “Eva Yerbabuena Ballet Flamenco” in 1998, which debuted at the Seville Biennale. Eva Yerbabuena and her outstanding musicians have been invited to perform her numerous works in countries around the globe. Eva Yerbabuena has won several awards for her work, including the Spanish National Dance Award (2001). Together with her musicians, she has enthralled audiences at every “Fest mit Pina“ so far.
