GÜNTER 'BABY' SOMMER AND SWISS HORNS

Dresden/ Zurich

Robert Morgenthaler - alphorn, trombone
Jean-Jacques Pedretti - alphorn, trombone
Günter 'Baby' Sommer - drums, percussion

Since 1994, the Swiss Horns have been focusing on the new, contemporary aspects of an instrument that most people usually associate with folklore. Their collaboration with Günter 'Baby' Sommer, the drummer and percussionist from Dresden, is especially exciting. Sommer counters the meditative, mystical and dark sound of the alphorns with sharp contrasts and tonal edges.
As an alphorn duo, Robert Morgenthaler and Jean-Jacques Pedretti have long since abandoned the well-worn paths of the Alps’ mountain and valley calls. They depart from the archaic foundation of this fascinatingly long herdsman's horn, improvising with the mystical and dark, meditatively vibrating tonal range to create contemporary, complex plays in its music. Günter 'Baby' Sommer provocatively casts his brushstrokes onto the warm backdrop of the horns, changing the scenario. The contrasts of hushed dynamic tension and rhythmical complexity mark their collaboration.
